Behavior change for Coronavirus Pandemic: how to avoid shaking hands, wash hands more, touch your face less.

Wash hands, don’t touch your face, and don’t shake anyone’s hand– those are the most common prescriptions amid Covid19 outbreak. Now, even the least informed of all knows this. But then you find yourself touching your nose; or, you meet an old respectable aunt in the neighbor, and you are struggling to resist her arms she extends to hug you. The following are some tricks you can use as you turn the anti-Coronavirus measures into habits.

No Shaking hands

Refraining from a familiar handshaking can be a challenge. If you find it difficult, especially when you meet people who are still resistant about the new greetings, try this technique. Make it a joke. Make it humorous when you turn down people's invitations to touch your hands. Greet them with your leg instead, wave, or go away with a jocular comment. Often they reciprocate with another joke.

Washing hands frequently

Let me suppose you know the right ways to wash your hands. Some people may find that they are not washing as often as it is recommended. One trick that can help is to set washing spots in visible places at your home. If you put water on your door, it will remind you to wash before you enter your door compared to keeping water the in bathroom. Put water and soap everywhere.

Touching your face.

Touching the face is mostly involuntary. Touching your face is the worst way of transmitting coronavirus. If you touch a coronavirus, you can’t get sick unless you put it into your respiratory system. It is not easy to just stop touching your face. The memory champion Nelson Dellis recommends one memory techniques to help you avoid touching your face (you can watch here). Make your hands dirty with a pen or a marker, so that every time you involuntarily touch your face a visual signal from your marked hand reminds you not touch it.
Another technique, which I came across surfing online, is to stain your hands with smelly onions. Once you are tempted to touch your face, onions smell will shock your nose and remind you that you should not be doing that. Try out either of the techniques and see the which one nudges you best for you not to touch yourself.

In conclusion, these are some of the behaviors I have found some people struggle with yet they can be life-saving. As a reminder, other crucial measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus are avoiding gatherings, avoiding non-imperative travelling, covering your mouth and nose, especially when you have some symptoms or dealing with someone who has, among others. Feel free to share with others how you are changing  your behaviors in the wake of Covid19 outbreak.
